What a Chip Chat sounds like
Short questions. Honest answers. No jargon shield.
A sample of the register, drawn from questions Venkat is asked most often.
QuestionEveryone says a fab costs billions. What is actually expensive?
VenkatThe tools. A single lithography system can cost more than the building it stands in, and a fab needs hundreds of tools. The cleanroom and utilities around them are not cheap either, but the equipment list is where the billions live.
QuestionWhy do fab projects slip?
Almost never because of the chips. They slip in the gap between the building and the tools: a hookup that was not ready, a utility spec that did not match, a crew that could not get through the door on the day the crate arrived. That interface needs an owner.
QuestionI am a diploma student. Is there a place for me in this industry?
I am a diploma holder from a polytechnic in Sivakasi. Fabs run on technicians and technologists, and they are hired in far larger numbers than designers. Start with your hands, learn one tool properly, and the ladder goes further than you think.
