Signature explainer

Making a chip is making a cup of coffee.

Grind, filter, pour, bloom, crema, serve. Six steps every barista knows, and every one of them has a twin inside a semiconductor fab. Watch it brew.

Step 01 · Grind

It starts with something ordinary, ground very precisely.

In the cupWhole beans are ground to a size chosen for the brew. Too coarse and the water runs straight through. Too fine and it chokes.
In the fabOrdinary quartz sand is purified to 99.9999999% silicon, melted and pulled into a single perfect crystal. Everything after this assumes that purity.

Step 02 · Filter

Something decides what passes and what does not.

In the cupThe paper filter holds back the grounds and lets the liquid through. Change the filter and you change the cup.
In the fabA photomask and a beam of light decide where the circuit pattern lands on the wafer. Change the mask and you change the chip.

Step 03 · Pour

Pour evenly, or the whole batch is uneven.

In the cupA slow, even spiral wets every ground equally. A careless pour leaves dry patches and sour coffee.
In the fabDeposition lays a film only nanometres thick across a 300 mm wafer. Uniformity across that disc is the number a process engineer lives by.

Step 04 · Bloom

Gas escapes, and the structure appears.

In the cupFresh grounds release carbon dioxide and swell. The bloom is how you know the coffee is alive.
In the fabPlasma etch removes material exactly where the mask opened, turning a flat film into a three-dimensional structure. Gases in, gases out.

Step 05 · Crema

The golden layer that carries everything.

In the cupCrema is the emulsified layer on top. It holds the aroma and tells a barista whether the shot was pulled properly.
In the fabUp to fifteen storeys of copper interconnect sit above the transistors, wiring billions of switches together. It is the layer everyone forgets and nothing works without.

Step 06 · Serve

Then someone tastes it and tells you the truth.

In the cupThe cup is served. All the care upstream is judged in one sip.
In the fabThe chip is packaged, tested on automatic test equipment, marked and shipped. The tester does not care how hard the process was.

Your host

Twenty-two years of fab floors. Still the most curious person at the table.

Venkatesh Kumar Pandurengan started as an electrical supervisor in Sivakasi and learned semiconductors one shift, one tool and one qualification at a time. Six fab startups, three ATMP/OSAT programmes and more than 1,400 equipment installations later, he is building India's semiconductor capability and hosting the conversations around it.
